BC Parks announced Friday that they have been in the process of creating a new app to address the growing need for a scheduling service on popular multi-pitch routes in and around the Stawamus Chief during the summer.

The announcement comes in response to a survey sent out by the Squamish Access Society earlier this year to determine what is bothering climbers in the Sea to Sky Region. The biggest complaint: ‘Multi-pitch line ups on the Stawamus Chief’.

It has been a problem for ages. You wake up at 8 am in the parking lot of the Stawamus Chief on a Saturday morning in Squamish, BC during the summer, decide to have a late breakfast and the head out on the Grand Wall trail only to find yourself waiting in line at the bottom of the Grand Wall behind two or three parties, some of who are climbing for the very first time.

“Last summer I had to wake up before 7:30 am just to get on Diedre and there was already a party en-route” , said climber Jimmy Benton, “I’m new to climbing but these line ups are getting ridiculous”.

Watch and listen to Michaela Kiersch as she makes the first female ascent of Necessary Evil (5.14c), a mythical route (in the Virgin River Gorge) first climbed by Chris Sharma in 1997.

The Neverending Story (Unendliche Geschichte) 8b+ was established by Beat Kammerlander in 199. At that time it was the hardest multipitch route of the world. Now, over 25 years later the route has just seen 2 repetitions.

Patxi Usobiaga takes us through the process of what it was like to climb a route he had attempted 8 years ago in Oliana, Spain when he felt he was at his peak. That was before his life changed and climbing took a backseat. In 2016 and 2017 Patxi returned to climbing 9th grade routes and on November 10th, 2017 he sent Pachamama, a route that marked a before and after for him as a climber. He had left it undone 8 years before when he first tried it, but he was finally in shape and motivated enough to return, work on this project, and eventually send what has been his hardest route to date.

When choosing a project far from home, Seb Bouin realizes the challenges associated with distance: Not only when it comes to the difficulty of the route, but also in terms of motivation, focus and personal growth. But Move 9b/9b+ in Flatanger, Norway, was the perfect challenge and he couldn’t resist. Now Seb’s fully committed, and on to what he calls the “logical next step” of his progression.
