On November the 11th and 12th 2016, Five Ten athlete Pete Whittaker became the first person to rope solo—all free—El Capitan in under 24 hours. He finished the solo in 20 hours 6 minutes, making his ascent both the first of its kind and the first solo-free of El Cap in a day. Rope Solo Free Climbing is a sport that few people know about and even less people do. We join Five Ten climber Pete Whittaker, his long time climbing partner Tom Randall and Big wall solo climbing expert Andy Kirkpatrick as they take us through the paces of what it really means to make a solo-free ascent of El Cap.

Well that is a wrap of the 2017 Canadian Open Bouldering Nationals from Rock Jungle in Edmonton, AB. Sean McColl lands on the top of the podium as a nine time champion next to Alannah Yip, who holds her second Canadian title.

As a reflection into our climbing athletes heading towards the world stage in 2020, both of these climbers started their climbing careers on The Edge Climbing Team in North Vancouver and both worked under the tutelage of Coach Andrew Wilson and Mike Doyle. As our Canadian athletes set their sites on 2020, the results are a testament to the value of good coaching in the early years of a competitors life.

The 2017 Canadian Open Bouldering Nationals is moving into the final round this morning. Despite some troubles with the livefeed, the competition has been exciting to watch. On the Men’s side, the top five competitors flashed every problem, making it difficult to make it into the final round if you made a mistake. No major surprises coming out of the Men’s round. On the Women’s side, there was a clear distinction between the top two spots vs. the rest, with three tops from Alannah Yip and two tops from Bronwen Karnis. Be sure to tune into the FINAL round starting at 6pm Mountain Time!
