Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival Fall Series Starts Tonight!

The Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival starts their Fall Series tonight at The Rio Theatre, kicking down the doors with a special talk from Jon Walsh, a Calgary based alpinist, who has sought adventure in high and wild places for over two decades, followed by the film Citadel, directed by Alastair Lee.

The first mountain film shot in 4k, Citadel features hardcore UK alpinists Matt Helliker and Jon Bracey as they attempt the stunning NW ridge of the remote peak ‘The Citadel’ deep in the Neacola range, Alaska. The world’s first mountain film shot entirely in 4k, a stunning visual treat reveals alpine climbing like never before.

2016 VIMFF Fall Series: Interview with Filmmakers Simon Bischoff and Mathew Farrell on ‘Before it Falls’

The 2016 Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival will be kicking off their Fall Series next week, running November 22nd to the 25th, 2016. Added late to the program was a film titled ‘Before it Falls’ featuring the Ewbank Route on the Totem Pole in Tasmania. We thought it would be cool to catch up with the film makers to find out how they brought their vision to reality. The film, created by Simon Bischoff and Mathew Farrell will be featured on the Rock Climbing Night, Friday, November 25th at Centennial Theatre in North Vancouver.

Video: Second Ascent of ‘Es Pontas (9a) by Jernej Kruder

Es Pontas (9a) was set up by Chris Sharma in 2006 after 3 years of working on the route. The line got popular by showing his ascent in the movie “King Lines” by BigUpProductions. Many climbers have tried to do the second ascent since then, but no one succeeded – until Jernej Kruder showed up in October 2016 and repeated the route after just 39 tries. He agreed to Chris Sharma in not putting a grade on the route: “I’ll just stick with Chris’ words: This thing is so specific. For sure it’s about 9th grade, but there are so many different factors. Like the dyno. If there are 200 people in the world climbing 9a, maybe just 10 percent of them can do it. Then there is the fear factor. The mind battle of trying it all over again without knowing if you’re able to do all the moves or not.”
