Here is an update from Jeff Yoo regarding Squamish Rampage that will take place this weekend in Squamish, BC. Be sure to register here before Wednesday for the event.
The second annual Squamish Rampage is an annual outdoor charity bouldering event/competition where the local and international climbing community gather, climb & fund-raise to support the community. This year we have teamed up with SlackLife BC and Flow-Acro Yoga to organize a mega event, Squamish Uprising 2015. Throughout the day, events in climbing, slack lining, and acro yoga will be happening simultaneously and participants can indulge in any of these 3 disciplines as they desire.
This year, all proceeds will go to two different organizations
Squamish Access Society whose mission is to protect public access to the climbing areas of the greater Squamish region, to engage as responsible stewards of the climbing environment and to advocate for access to quality self-propelled recreation
Climb and Conquer Society Canada whose mission is to support youth (age 4-18) from disadvantaged backgrounds to build healthy self-esteem, relationships and leadership skills through rock climbing and caring mentorships.
Here are the details of Squamish Rampage:
The outdoor bouldering competition will begin promptly at 9am and run until 4pm. The competition will be split into a morning and afternoon session in two different bouldering areas. You can register as a beginner (V0-V3), intermediate (V4-V6), or open (V7 and above) competitor. There will be medals and prizes awarded to the top competitors in each category.
Don’t have shoes?
We will have a free shoe demo throughout the entire event where the latest and greatest shoes from La Sportiva, Evolv, Mad Rock, and Five Ten will be available with a piece of ID/credit card.
Don’t know the area?
We will have guided tours of the bouldering areas for both the morning and afternoon sessions.
Afraid that you might get hurt?
We will have a physician on-site for the entire event in case of an emergency.
What else is going on at this event?
We have received an immense amount of support from the climbing community and this has allowed us to add a few perks for people who register for this event:
-Free Calisthenic classes. If you are interested in upping your bouldering power, you can take free calisthenics classes with professional trainer and rock crusher Tyler Thompson.
-Free Physiotherapy. If you have an achey muscle or joint and you’re too cheap to see a professional at home, you can get free physiotherapy sessions by William Bateman PT.
-Free Slacklining. We have teamed up with Slacklife BC who will be setting up slack lines at the competition area.
-Paid Acro-Yoga. There will be Acroyoga classes available for $10 per session throughout the day.
-The Closing Party. We will have a party where participants of Rampage, SlackLifeBC, and FlowAcroYoga can pay a cover charge of $10 and dance/drink to celebrate this momentous event.
50/50 Raffle Draw:
Throughout the event we will be selling $5 dollar raffle tickets that give you a chance to win sick prizes that were donated by our sponsors AND a chance to win a big pot of money. Some of the donated prizes include high end climbing shoes, rope bags, harnesses, belay glasses, and much much more. The final name drawn after all of these prizes have been given out will be to win 50% of the money from the raffle draw. The other 50% will be donated to Squamish Access Society and Climb & Conquer.
If you actually calculate the odds, I can almost guarantee that you will not walk away empty handed if you buy raffle tickets.
Forest Preservation
Squamish has gained recognition as a world-class climbing destination which means that foot traffic in the forest increases on a yearly basis. Events like the Squamish Rampage will also increase the traffic within the forest and we want to ensure that our future generations will also have the benefit of enjoying the forest and climbing areas in the years to come. The best way to ensure public access to these climbing areas is to practice good stewardship anytime you are visiting Squamish (this applies to the event and all other times). Here are a few general guidelines that we will be emphasizing at the event:
Stay on marked trails at all times.
This is a big one. Anytime that you walk off-trail you are crushing vegetation and disrupting the soil. This is harmful to the forest and all the animals that live within it.
Do not urinate or defecate in the forest. You may be tempted to water the plants, but just remember that the forest has many visitors and nobody likes to step in a fresh pool of urine… would you? We have well maintained washrooms at 4 different locations in the Grand-wall/Apron area — Please use them.
Please keep dogs on a leash. Crag dogs are always awesome companions for a fun day of climbing. However, if you’re spotting/belaying your buddy, your dog may be pooping on the trail, chewing on the roots of thousand-year-old trees, and digging up holes in the ground. Please keep them on a leash and in site at all times.
Share the climbing area. People have travelled long and far to climb in Squamish. If you see someone who would like to climb in the same boulder/vicinity, please allow adequate time and distance to allow them to enjoy a full session.
Brush away all tick-marks. One of joys of outdoor climbing is figuring out which features on the rock to use as holds. Not everybody likes to have their puzzles solved for them.
Don’t “yard-sale” your belongings. It is a good habit to put all of your belongings back into your pack while you’re climbing so that people aren’t tripping over your belongings.
How can I register and how much does it cost?:
Register online at here until August 13 (midnight) for $30 and Event day (August 15): $35
*If there is a significant amount of rainfall, the bouldering competition portion of the event will be cancelled and all the proceeds will be donated to the two not-for-profit organizations*
