Last week, Sean McColl announced that he would not compete in the 2019 Canadian Open Bouldering Nationals, via instagram, because he would be training in Europe.
Speaking with Sean last week, we wanted to get a little more information on his decision to not compete. here is what he had to say.
‘Last year, I decided to train out east, attend Nationals at Up The Bloc, then head over to Europe. While the training was good, I felt like I wasn’t in Europe early enough to prepare myself for the beginning of the World Cup Season.’
Sean reported that he thinks that caliber of boulders and bouldering events has been increasing in Canada but for his own Olympic preparation, it is better to experience training events that are both more similar to the World Cup and set by ISFC route setters. During his time in Europe, he will be attending a training camp as well as visiting a number of European climbing gyms that can prepare him for the season.
