Last night, Sean McColl became the first Canadian climber to secure a spot at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. After a disappointing Speed round and a difficult set of boulders, Sean came to compete and crushed the lead round of the 2019 Combined event in Hachioji, Japan.
Through three events, Sean McColl sits in 10th place, which means that he will not compete in the finals round of the 2019 Combined Event in Hachioji. The 2019 Combined Event in Hachioji selects seven people to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Because of a country quota, each country can only have two athletes per gender in the climbing event. Because the Japanese team has four athletes in the final round of this weeks competition, only two can be selected to qualify for the olympics, creating two more spots for qualification. The host country also receives a spot automatically (that counts towards their quota) and because they have so many athletes in the finals, that spot has no been deferred to the next athlete in the competition, which in this case, was our ver own, Sean McColl!
