UPDATE: Angel’s Crest Trail to Re-open Today

According to the BC Parks Area Supervisor, the Angel’s Crest Trail will re-open today. The trail was closed after the rockfall that took place in the area last month. It should be noted that rockfall debris is still present on the upper sections of the Angel’s Crest Trail and people using the trail should proceed with extra caution.

UPDATE: BC Parks has just confirmed that there are Peregrine Falcons nesting on the route Angel’s Crest and they will be keeping the route closed until the young have fledged the nest. Please check the BC Parks website for any changes.

To protect the falcons and for your own safety, please respect the climbing route closure. Falcon monitoring will continue and the closure will be lifted by July 31, 2015, or earlier if monitoring indicates chicks have left the nest. . If you encounter a falcon please respect them and keep your distance. Please report falcon sightings to BC Parks Joanna.Hirner@gov.bc.ca or 604-924-2228.

Fading Paradise: A Documentary about Ao Tonsai

For a very long time Ao Tonsai, a village located in Thailand next to the andaman see has been a paradise for climbers and people who want to escape from the loud and busy tourist spots and enjoy a simple life in a beautiful, wild and still quite untouched place. Right now Tonsai is in jeopardy of losing this special status. I was there in march 2014 when things where still normal, then I returned in december only nine months later and what I saw there gave me quite a big shock. I will release the whole documentary on the 9th of July 2015 and I hope you enjoy it!

Canadian Starters for IFSC World Cup Chongqing

This weekend the country of China will play host to the IFSC World Bouldering Cup and Speed competition which will be held in Chongqing. Looking at the start-list, a number of competitors have chosen not to be a part of this competition. On the women’s side, both Alex Puccio and Anna Stohr are both out with injuries. Lone Canadian Women, Stacey Weldon, will giving everyone a run for their money. Stacey looks sharpened and ready to go with two great finishes in Toronto and Vail. It also looks like most female US athletes have given this stop on the IFSC circuit a skip, with only Sierra Blair-Coyle on the Women’s side.

Most competitors on the Men’s side look the same. The big players, like Adam Ondra, Sean McColl, and Jan Hojer will still be a part of the action. It is also great to see that Jason Holowach has made the trip to see how he does after placing sixth in Vail, CO. Either way, the competition Saturday will surely be exciting.

Here are our Canadian athletes.

Video: Bad Fall in Kalymnos

We usually wouldn’t post a bad fall but this one was a tough choice because there is a lesson to be learned here. Often, when we are climbing on overhanging rock, we have a tendency to think that it is much safer only to find ourselves in a dangerous situation. Through being aware of the rope and dynamic belaying techniques, we keep each other safe. Disclaimer: If you don’t want to see a bad fall, don’t watch this! The climber appears okay after but does have some damage.

Gear Review: Patagonia’s Crag Daddy Pack 45L

patagonia-cragdaddy45

I have used a ‘duffle style’ backpack for years. I love the ‘stuff it’ packing style and the quick accessibility for times when I think I have forgotten something at the crag. However, over the past few years, I’ve had some trouble with my lower back when hiking to the crag. The pack that I’ve used in the past didn’t provide the support I needed for long hikes and I often ended up carrying my rope separately just to make room for all the hot/cold weather essentials. I needed something that was going to give me both the support for my lower back and the convenience of easy access. With this in mind, I decided it would be a great idea to check out Patagonia’s Crag Daddy Pack 45L.
