Local News ‘Andres Elizondo sends Pulse (5.14a)’

Last week Andres Elizondo sent Pulse (5.14a) in Cheakamus Canyon. Originally from Mexico, Andres has become a strong personality in the Vancouver climbing scene. After putting to rest Division Bell earlier in the spring after trying it many times the previous summer, Andres continued to work on Pulse sporadically and sent the route rather quickly compared to its counterpart. This was his first 5.14a.

Pulse was the first 5.14a established in Canada by Jim Sanford in 1995, It is considered hard for the grade.

In other news, Andy White has established ‘No More Mr. Gneiss Guy (V12)’ at the Boulderfields in Kelowna, BC. Andy has worked hard to share ‘The Fields’ with the rest of the world and it sounds like he is still finding great lines. Congratulations Andy!

Squamish Rampage/Uprising – Outdoor Bouldering Event – August 15th, 2015

Here is an update from Jeff Yoo regarding Squamish Rampage that will take place this weekend in Squamish, BC. Be sure to register here before Wednesday for the event.

The second annual Squamish Rampage is an annual outdoor charity bouldering event/competition where the local and international climbing community gather, climb & fund-raise to support the community. This year we have teamed up with SlackLife BC and Flow-Acro Yoga to organize a mega event, Squamish Uprising 2015. Throughout the day, events in climbing, slack lining, and acro yoga will be happening simultaneously and participants can indulge in any of these 3 disciplines as they desire.

This year, all proceeds will go to two different organizations

Squamish Access Society whose mission is to protect public access to the climbing areas of the greater Squamish region, to engage as responsible stewards of the climbing environment and to advocate for access to quality self-propelled recreation

Climb and Conquer Society Canada whose mission is to support youth (age 4-18) from disadvantaged backgrounds to build healthy self-esteem, relationships and leadership skills through rock climbing and caring mentorships.

Visit to Cafe Kraft with ‘Pino Stein’

This summer, we are doing a Spotcheck on the Frankenjura, a massive sport climbing area in Germany. The Frankenjura boasts over 4000 routes spread across a 100 km area in the state of Bavaria.

Steeped in history, the Frankenjura was the birthplace of modern sport climbing. It is famous for its characters, like Wolfgang Guillrich and Kurt Albert, as well as its influence on modern climbing culture. From the campus board to the redpoint, sport climbing in the Frankenjura has in one way or another shaped the way we think about climbing.

The closet big city to the Frankenjura is Nuremburg, Germany which happens to be home to Cafe Kraft, a state-of-art bouldering gym that has started to define indoor bouldering culture. We thought it best to burn a rest day checking it out. Cafe Kraft features 1600 square meters (you do the math!) of climbing space including a cafe lounge, ample space, and a full training centre, including a 45 degree wall and campus board.

We thought it would be interesting to get some insight from Pino Stein, the media director at Cafe Kraft on how they got started and some of their upcoming plans. Here is what he had to say.

Hi Pino, thanks for chatting with us!
