Interview with Alannah Yip

Alannah Yip is a rising star in the Canadian climbing scene. She started climbing at the age of six and joined The Edge team at the age of 9, due to the influence of her family friends, Sean and Jason McColl. Sending her first two v10’s in Rocklands this year and making finals in her last four competitions, Alannah has been training with the Climb Base5 Open Team to fulfill her goal of competing for Canada in the World Cup this year. We thought it would be great to check in with her on her preparation for this weekend and here is what she had to say.

November Sessions Bouldering Competition This Weekend

Just a reminder that November Sessions will take place this weekend at Climb Base5 this weekend. According to Sport Climbing Bc, this is already the largest local competition in BC history, with over 213 participants. The event will run across two days, with the Open, Junior, Youth A, and Youth B categories running on Saturday, November 7th and Youth C/D, Recreational, Experienced, and Advanced categories running on Sunday November 8th 2015.

Two things to note:

Doors open for spectators who want to watch the OPEN FINALS at 4:10pm on Saturday and then start at 430pm.

There will be an afer-party on Sunday starting at 830pm

Gear Review: Petzl Djinn Axess Quickdraw

Quickdraw design has come into wider scrutiny over the past few years. With the increasing practice of fixing draws, checking wear patterns on fixed draws has become the norm rather than the exception. Exacerbated by a need to reduce weight, the new H-style or concave design used in the modern carabiner has made prolonged-use of a carabiner a risk factor depending on the design. Now more than ever, climbers from all different disciplines are taking into consideration prolonged-use and the design of a quickdraw before shelling out a load of cash for a new set of draws.

A journal entry on mentality ‘Squamish Senday’

Last night, or this morning – I’m not sure which – I had a vision, or maybe a dream; that I was going to send Gibb’s Cave, and then Minor Threat, and then Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

It didn’t fire me up. I didn’t feel overly psyched. I just felt calm. Like it was a given. Not inevitable, and gained without hard work, but like, as long as I followed my true path the success would come.

I was almost derailed. The two people who I was supposed to climb with both bailed. Usually this would result in a lot of negativity from me as I don’t enjoy climbing alone. In fact, I usually actively dislike it. One of the reasons that I love climbing is that, while it is an individual sport, it is very social at the same time. When I climb alone, I get too lost in the chatter in my head. I over-analyse, I put myself down, and I don’t get the competitive element that fires up my psych.
