CASBC Update: Save the Kinnaird Bluffs in Castlegar, British Columbia!

Here is an update from Vince Hempsall, one of the directors of the Climber’s Access Society of British Columbia (CASBC), regarding the situation to save the Kinnaird Bluffs in Castlegar, BC.

Kinnaird Bluffs in Castlegar, British Columbia, have been located on private property for the past half century and, although the various owners allowed rock climbing there, access was always tentative. Last November the 17-acre piece of property where the bluffs are located were put on the market and The Association of West Kootenay Rock Climbers, a chapter of CASBC, immediately jumped in with an offer to save the Bluffs from development. The asking price of the property was $57,000.

New Guidebook ‘Cascades Rock’ by Blake Herrington

A new guidebook was recently released by Blake Herrington that covers 160 of the best multi-pitch and alpine climbs in Washington and Southern BC. The book itself, aptly named Cascades Rock, is spectacular and if purchased will most likely live on the top of your toilet seat if you are so inclined. Deep within its pages holds the secrets to many amazing areas from the Stuart range to Washington Pass, Southern BC, Index, and the North Cascades. Squamish Climbing Magazine had a chance to touch base with Blake as he was touting the book on this side of the border and here is what he had to say.

Interview with BC Climbing Coach and Mentor Andrew Wilson

To end a fantastic bouldering competition season in British Columbia, we thought it would be only fitting to interview climbing coach and mentor, Andrew Wilson. Andrew has long been a force in the competition scene, both in British Columbia and on a national level. With just under five years climbing experience under his belt, Andrew began his journey into the role of climbing coach 23 years ago at The Edge Climbing Centre in North Vancouver, BC. Along with his coaching partner, Mike Doyle, this team influenced a large amount of Canadian climbers including Sean McColl, Simon Parton, and Will Stanhope just to name a few.

This year, along with his new coaching partners Matt Johnson and Len Chong, the Climb Base 5 Open Adult Team was born, the first adult competition team in British Columbia. To start this interview, Andrew’s current coaching partner, Matt Johnson, was gracious enough to take over the introduction of Andrew to capture his influence over the years.

Online Survey for Climbers by Hans Christian Montenegro

Local climber, Hans Christian Montenegro, is trying to gather data on climbers and their training behaviours. Hans trains a number of clients at the Grand Wall Bouldering Co-op and is hoping to gather enough information that he can then help the community out by creating a space or service that would increase the efficiency of training in our community.
