Development News + Topo for the ‘Pilots Lounge’ in Squamish, BC

We are pleased to announce that Peter Winter has completed his crag, The Pilots Lounge, that sits high above Mamquam Service road above Valley Cliff. Last week, Peter finished off his last line on the wall, This is your Captain Speaking (5.13a.b), completing his run of the routes here. It should be noted that Peter did leave one ‘open project’ that may fall in the 5.14 range. The cliff boasts a number of fun route and is surely not to be missed. The only caveat is that this cliff is rather difficult to get to and only those strong enough to get there will be rewarded with some great climbing (plus a small pack of peanuts and have a glass of sugar water!)

Video: Back to Trad featuring Chris Schulte

Nice little flick featuring Chris Schulte as he makes his way back to traditional climbing from bouldering in Indian Creek.

Black Diamond Ambassador Chris Schulte has spent a lot of time bouldering in Indian Creek over the past few years. He always knew he would come back around to trad climbing, but didn’t expect it to happen through bouldering. In a homecoming-kind-of-feeling, Chris comes back around to trad climbing in the Creek, putting up new hard trad lines for the first time in 15 years.

CASBC Update: ‘Eldred River Valley’ Logging Update

Over the past week, there has been a flurry social media outreach regarding the logging of old growth forest in the Eldred River Valley. The concern started when a group of engineers were dropped off at the base of the Amon Rudh wall located in that area.

Action was quickly taken by climbers in the area through an online petition against logging the old growth forest that caught the attention of the greater climbing community. The petition itself is already up to 900+ signatures and growing.

Video: ‘El Capitan’ Featuring Ethan Pringle

We are not sure what is going on with the climbing industry, but it is happening all over the place, this time featuring Ethan Pringle in Yosemite presented by Dior. Has the world turned upside down?

Part of the ‘Call of the Wild’ series by Sauvage.

Living in San Francisco, Ethan felt the need to get out and confront himself to the mountains. Impressively brave and graceful, he scales the legendary Yosemite cliffs in California with his bare hands. Inherent in his conquest of new routes is a desire to reach a higher physical and spiritual level.

Eldred River Valley ‘Yosemite of the North’ Under Immediate Threat + Petition

A post on facebook regarding the Eldred Valley has been gaining a lot of traction recently and we thought we would post the information here for everyone to share.

14570355_10154370607130027_264014941472767123_n

Powell River is an isolated community where recreation access is limited to industrial access roads into the backcountry. The Eldred Valley has world class rock climbing and alpine mountaineering potential on par with Yosemite Valley. Logging in the Eldred valley has threatened access in the area since the early 80s and user groups have been fighting to keep the little access we have. At this time Western Forest Products is about to log a large patch of old growth trees at the base of a 500m/1500-ft tall granite dome called “Amon Rudh” that has been a climbing destination since its first ascent in 1999, when Colin Dionne, Chris Wild, Victor Ting, and Aaron Black established “On the Virg,” a 10 pitch 5.10 of the highest quality. Access to the wall is a steep trail established in 2007 through some of the most beautiful old Cedar and Fir trees on the entire coast! The terrain is far too steep, the sandy soil type means the slope can’t be stable after harvest, and, like the rest of the slope, it will be prone to landslides. We have no other access approach to the dome because of obtuse, outdated government policies dictating the “Permanent Deactivation” of existing industrial-strength roads. Your support will help us to show our local governing bodies how important access is to the climbing community and adventure tourism here in Powell River, and convince them to stop logging the last remaining old growth forest and destroying established industrial access to public lands.
