Local News ‘Jeremy Blumel makes First Ascent of The Pegboard (5.12) on Apron in Squamish’

We are pleased to announce that Jeremy Blumel made the first ascent of The Pegboard (5.12) on the Apron in Squamish, BC.

First cleaned by Evan Stevens in 2010, the line sits high on the Apron right before the last steep hand crack of St. Vitus Dance. According to Stevens, the line involves a lot of gear on locker fingers with no feet to a slow rising traverse.

Alex Honnold Free Solos ‘Freerider (5.13a)’ as First Free Solo of El Capitan in Yosemite’

The news over the pat two days have been mindblowing! First exclusively covered by National Geographic, it was reported that Alex Honnold had free soloed EL Capitan via the route ‘Freerider.

@alexhonnold composed and casual free soloing (sans cord) 2000ft above the deck on the Enduro Pitch of Freerider yesterday. Alex's process to prepare for his dream of free soloing El Cap has been an incredible, and sometimes stressful, journey to witness and be a part of over the last two years while filming him for a feature documentary (co-directed by @mochinyc). In some ways I expected (and prayed for) nothing less on his big day but it was still mind bending to see how relaxed he was in the final days leading up to the climb and of course during the climb – as seen here locked off reaching full extension high on the wall with mere finger tips in contact to granite, feet smeared on nothing. What I've learned over the last 10 years about Alex is he isn't the kid that shows up to do well on the exam. If it counts, he's there to ace it, knock out the extra credit questions and finish early. I'd say he aced his final exam yesterday with extra credit for style and composure. When he got to the top, he looked at me and said "I'm pretty sure I could go back to the bottom and do it again right now." Congrats bud. You crushed. It was historic, it was brilliant, it was moving beyond words. Thanks to all of Alex's climbing partners who supported along the way and especially to one helluva film crew for staying committed through thick and thin doing some of the best work I've ever seen. So so proud of everyone. See the @natgeo link in my bio for more.

Access Alert ‘Construction at Chek Canyon Parking and Towing Cars at The Chief’

For all those travelling to the Sea to Sky this weekend, there are a few things to note (other than the rain this morning).

1. Chek Canyon Campground Update

The Chek Canyon Campground Development is in full effect and the results are a bit startling. The upper parking lot has been expanded along with a substantial amount of tree being taken down to make way for six ‘van-friendly’ camp spots right across from Foundation Wall. On Friday afternoon, it looked as though the upper parking lot may be open for the weekend, but if not, parking is limited to the middle parking lot so park courteously for others. See more photos below.

2. Reports of Car Towing at Stawamus Chief

Early season reports from the Squamish Access Society were no joke. Cars that are parked illegally or overnight are being towed at the Stawamus Chief. One group of climbers who were on the wall overnight left a note on their car to explain the situation only to find their car gone when they returned.

Big downpour early this morning that lasted an hour followed by cloudy skies. That’s all folks! Continue reading »

Local News ‘First Ascent of Pantera (A3+ 5.10) by Danny Guestrin, Jon Rigg, Chris Trull, Ben Stanley’

We are pleased to announce that Danny Guestrin, Jon Rigg, Chris Trull, (Ben Stanley) have established a new line up the Stawamus Chief in Squamish, BC.

The line, Pantera (A3+ 5.10), climbs the seldom explored wall above Ghostdancing, then incorporates a pitch and a half of great aid climbing on Bald Egos up to Vulcan’s Artery. Above Vulcan’s artery two pitches of engaging nailing in a fine position (including a bitchin’ tree climb!) breach the Pan Wall to the summit.
