We had a chance to review this stove during the fall climbing season and here is what we thought.
MSR Windburner Stove System Combo
Out of the package, the MSR Windburner Stove System Combo is a genius way to pack for a big camping trip without all the bulk of separate pans and items. The cookware and stove combination of this set sits well together in a pack and prepares you for almost any mean. Although the system may be a little big for one person, it fits well with any meal preparation that involved a group of three or larger.
We found that the stove worked well and was able to simmer. We also enjoyed the control the stove had when switching from skillet to pot and in reverse thanks to the built in system that allows the stove and the cookware to integrate easily and reduce falling over, typical on other minimalist stoves. The one downside about this system is that we found we were cooking too closely when using a moka style coffee maker. Average boil time for 1 litre is 6 min, 6 seconds with a 4l liquid capacity.
The whole package is very light and durable, with the handle of the pot packing up tightly to create virtually no bulk in you backpack. Weighing in at only 1 lb. 13.3 oz, the MSR Windburner Stove System Combo is hard to beat when it comes to packing.
Overall, we would highly recommend the MSR Windburner Stove System Combo for anyone on a backpack trip in a group of three or more. The lightness of the combo and the functionality for almost any meal, this stove should be a go-to for any avid backpacker. On the downside, the stove does not combo well with non-integrated cooking items, like a moka coffee maker. Nonetheless, this package is well worth it when saving space for any trip!
