The Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival just released its 2019 line up and it certainly does not dissappoint. VIMFF has always been a time for the climbing community to come together and celebrate some of the achievements that have been caught through film and media throughout the year.
Squamish Climbing Magazine is a proud supporter of VIMFF and has had a partnership with them for a number of years. Below is you 2019 Climber’s Guide to the Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival.
Opening Night – Feb. 22nd, 2019 730pm @ Centennial Theatre
Opening night at VIMFF will feature long time professional and World Champion climber Liv Sansov. Growing up in the French Alps, Liv Sansov is no stranger to the mountains and has recently moved her goals towards alpine climbing.
Best of Climbing – Feb 24, 2019, 2:00 @ The Rio
The best of climbing will feature a number of films including the following:
Blood Moon
The film follows Robbie Phillips, Calum Cunningham and Alan Carne as they attempt to open a new climb, ground up, on a 700m Big Wall called Tsaranoro Atsimo in Madagascar.
Craig’s Reaction
Since a 100 foot fall in 2002 that took his right leg and left him with multiple spinal injuries, Colorado climber Craig DeMartino has led one hell of a life, including lauded First Disabled and In-A-Day Ascents on El Capitan. But it’s his day-to-day story that really makes an impact.

Kelly Cordes – Feb 28, 2019, 7:30 @ The Rio
Climber, writer, and self-proclaimed margarita specialist Kelly Cordes has established new alpine routes around the world, from Alaska to Peru, and Patagonia to Pakistan. He was an editor for the American Alpine Journal from 2000-2012, and his book, The Tower, won the 2015 nonfiction outdoor literature categories of the Banff Mountain Book Awards and the National Outdoor Book Awards. He also co-authored Tommy Caldwell’s 2017 bestselling autobiography, The Push. Kelly lives in Estes Park, Colorado.
UBC Climbing Night – Mar. 1st, 2019 730pm @Frederic Wood Theatre
Come out to UBC and experience a number of Legendary tales from the vertical world.
Speakers for this night include Doug Robinson, a professional mountaineer known internationally for his climbing, guiding and backcountry skiing and the films Blood Moon and Women Are Mountains.
VIMFF Finale with Sasha DiGiulian – Mar 2, 2019, 7:30 @ Centennial Theatre
Starting at the age of six, Sasha Digiulian was all climbing. The first american women to climb 5.14d, Sasha has been on the forefront of climbing for over five years. This summer in the Canadian Rockies, Sasha DiGiulian set out to accomplish the Canadian Trilogy; a series of three 5.14 big walls in and around the Canadian Rockies. You don’t want to miss this one!
