Development News ‘Update to Nanook (11d; 5 pitches) in North Walls’

Updated topo for Nanook (11d; 5 pitches) on the lower left side of the North Walls.

Changes include:

1. Added another bolt to the roof section of the 3rd pitch
2. moved the belay at the top of the 4th pitch up and left
3. A note regarding the rap line for Nanook and New Life – some 70m ropes do not make it back to the top of the 1st on Nanook. Tie knots and if you are unsure if you can make it, there is a rap station directly below that is hard to see and will get you back to the ground more easily.

Access Update ‘Chek Canyon Logging Update via Squamish Access Society’

The road building on the Conroy Creek FSR required for logging operations in the area will start on Friday 14th July, several months later than originally advised, and continue 7 days per week. Work sites on the FSR are well beyond the Chek parking lots, but heavy machinery will be brought into the area so people driving on the FSR between the parking lots and the 99 should take care.

Access Update ‘Closure of climbing routes to protect falcons are no longer in effect’

A number of questions have been surfacing on various groups regarding the falcon closures. Here is the official statement from BC Parks.

June 29, 2017: Closure of climbing routes to protect falcons are no longer in effect
Juvenile falcons at Stawamus Chief have fledged and are flying well, so climbing routes in the South Gully area of the Chief are now open and no other closures are expected until next year’s falcon breeding season. Thanks to the climbing community for their cooperation and support in the efforts to protect falcons nesting at Stawamus Chief!

Falcons may still visit the South Gully and other areas of the Chief. If you encounter a falcon please keep your distance, and if birds appear agitated, leave the area as soon as possible.
