Local News ‘Vikki Weldon sends ‘Spirit of the West (5.14a)’
We are very psyched to announce that Vikki Weldon has sent Tom Wright’s Spirit of the West (5.14a) at Paradise Valley, Squamish, BC. After working the route for three seasons, Vikki Weldon made the ascent yesterday after trying the route on and off this season.
The route itself is notoriously difficult and for some reason has some of the finicky conditions in Squamish which played a significant role in how long it took for Vikki to put this one down. Congratulations Vikki! Inspiring send to say the least!

Outdoor Research Men’s Wadi Rum Shorts | Gear Review
Inspired by the remote rock walls of southern Jordan, the Wadi Rum Short features a durable Cordura/nylon/spandex/cotton material that can withstand abrasive rock while still allowing you to move freely. Designed specifically with climbing in mind, the Wadi Rum can handle almost any situation and features two huge pockets in the front plus a zippered pocket for carrying almost anything important.
After testing these shorts over a three month period, we found that our favourite feature was the huge front pockets. From steep sport routes to granite cliffs, these shorts were durable in all climbing applications. We also appreciated the inner draw string to cinch down the waste without interfering with our harness when climbing. With a modern fit (read: slim but stretchy!), these shorts allowed for a wide range of movement while climbing. Overall, we found that these shorts were simply just fun to wear! It should be noted that when first wearing the shorts, the material felt a touch stiffer than expected but became much softer after a few washes. We would recommend these shorts for anyone looking for a durable climbing short with good movement that are going to last multiple seasons.
The Wadi Rum can be purchased at Climb On Equipment and Valhalla Pure.

Meet the Climbers of the 2018 Squamish Election
Every four years, our local government elects one Mayor, six Councillors, and two School Trustees. With Squamish going through a monumental shift in both community and development, it is more important than ever to be informed of those who are running. Special thanks to Toby Foord-Kelcey, who always has his finger on the pulse of municipal matters, for taking the time to inform our readers of those who identify as climbers running for office.
