The Boulders Climbing Gym is playing host to the 2015 National Difficulty and Speed Competition this weekend. Climbers from all over Canada travelled to Central Saanich to compete with the best from each province. With beautiful weather and the doors open on the wall, the day was surely not to disappoint. Here is the latest Training Beta podcast featuring British climber Alex Barrows who recently completed Era Vella (5.14d) in Spain.

When I met Alex, he was trying really hard on a 14a for weeks. Then I saw him a couple years later in the Red River Gorge, where I immediately noticed he’d improved dramatically. He was onsighting 13+ and sending 14s like it was his job. Then I heard he sent Era Vella (5.14d in Spain) this spring, ’15, and I had to know how he was improving so much.

Over the past few years, Squamish has faced a large growth in population as those living in the greater Vancouver discover its beauty. Along with an influx of people comes both recreational and industrial growth in the area. Although none of the current proposals directly affect climbing in the region (although the LNG plant would surely be an eye-sore from the top of the Chief), we think it is important for the climbing community to stay informed on these issues. For the past nine years, The Squamish Mountain Festival has been a staple of the Squamish summer experience. Filled with speakers, clinics, and films, the festival continues to offer a place for climbers to gather and celebrate.

This year, the festival has gone through some substantial changes, including a change to the name and venue of the festival. When these changes were initially discovered, there was some concern about the changes on social media prior to the launch of the event website. Squamish Climbing Magazine thought that it would be best to go right to the source to find out about some of the decision making behind these changes. Justin Sweeny, the event manager for the Arc’teryx Climbing Academy, was kind enough to answer our questions and here is what he had to say.
