This Rock Climbing Gym Wants to Disrupt Your Work-Life Balance

Interesting article out of Bloomberg Business by Kyle Chayka regarding the business of climbing gyms.

When Joe Lemay, a 38-year-old developer in Boston, decided to leave his corporate job to launch a startup, he opted against a permanent office. Instead, Lemay spends his days at Brooklyn Boulders (BKB) Somerville, a rock-climbing gym designed to double as a co-working haven for entrepreneurs. “I’ll be sitting there coding and get up from my chair, go over to a squat rack, and do 10 reps on the rack, then come back to my computer,” Lemay says. “You can always be in the mindset of being active and productive at the same time.”

2015 Canadian Youth Team Training Video

Great video featuring the 2015 Canadian Youth team.

In June of 2015 the Canadian youth climbing team chose Montreal and it’s many quality rope and bouldering gyms to prepare for the IFSC Youth World Championships in Arco Italy. Organized by the CEC and Allez Up Climbing Gym the camp proposed mock comp and workshop situations in all three disciplines (bouldering, lead and speed).
This short video recaps the week of hard work put in by the young athletes, and shares the coaches perspectives on the training camp and the future of Canadian competition climbing.

We Seek Thrills while they Seek to Survive by Jeremy Blumel

main

This weeks column by Jeremy Blumel in the Squamish Chief, reflects on the privilege of the climbing lifestyle in comparison to the plight of the Syrian refugees.

It was a day I had been moaning and complaining about the weather, droning predictably like a good Canadian on how we were supposed to get another week of clear, cool, fall-tinged bliss before the rain set in. I had begun training at the gym in earnest, feeling spiteful towards Mother Nature and her quick, emotionless turn around from glorious, sun-baked, splitter blue skies to West Coast water works.

Interview with Hans Christian Montenegro ‘Training to Climb’

Originally from Colombia, Hans Christian Montenegro recently moved to Squamish from Ottawa this spring to pursue his love for climbing. Before transplanting his life to a small trailer in Brackendale, Hans had never been to Squamish. He had seen the photos and read the magazines and decided that this was the place for his next adventure.

Hans is no stranger to the culture of climbing. He started climbing in 1996 and quickly became enamoured with everything climbing. He began competition climbing in Columbia and then spent 6 more years competition climbing in Montreal, where he was crowned the Overall Quebec Champion in 2013-2014. Now focused on outdoor climbing, Hans’ climbing philosophy is ever changing. We thought it would be interesting to meet up with Hans and get his take on his transition to Squamish.

Local News ‘Tucker Webb sends ‘World of Hurt”

We are pleased to announce that Tucker Webb, originally from Penticton, sent World of Hurt (v10) last week. Originally put up by Jordan Wright, this problem towers over the forest as one of the highest ‘highballs’ in Squamish. Tucker started working the problem last September and practiced the rig on top rope before gathering enough pads (and courage!) for the send.
