Gear Review: Scarpa Furia Climbing Shoe

As Scarpa continues to make a strong push in the North American market, they also continue to impress us with beautifully crafted shoes for climbers who love to get technical with their tools. The Scarpa Furia is a technical climbing shoe designed to maximize feel from plastic to rock. It features a sensitive 3mm rubber with no midsole and an aggressive downturned shape designed for overhanging terrain. We had an opportunity to review the shoe over the last four months and here is what we had to say.

Gear Review: Arc’teryx Atom SL Hoody

atomsl

The Atom line of jackets by Arc’teryx have an established reputation as warm, light and stylish jackets that are best used as cold weather mid-layers and shoulder season outer-layers. The Atom Super light (SL) is similar in fit and appearance to the Atom LT and AR, but it has much lighter insulation that makes it best suited for high output activities or milder days. Squamish Climbing Magazine has been putting the Atom SL through its paces on snow, rock, and muddy trails over the past 10 weeks, and we’ve found it to be a versatile addition to an admittedly already packed gear closet.

Gear Review: Petzl’s Hirundos Harness (Unisex)

The Petzl Hirundos is a high-end climbing harness designed primarily for the purpose of sport and alpine climbing. At the core of its construction is a lightweight design that provides a balance between comfort and a freedom of movement not found in your typical harness. Combined with a number of features that reduce the wear when taking multiple falls, the Hirundos has set a new standard for lightweight harness design. Squamish Climbing Magazine had a chance to field test the harness over the past six months and here is what we thought.

Gear Review: Five Ten Team 5.10 Climbing Shoe

team-510

The Five Ten Team 5.10 is a very aggressive downturned climbing shoe that performs exceptionally well on steep rock. The shape of these shoes is their most defining feature, placing the foot in an ideal position for pulling in on footholds. Additionally, their mid range stiffness makes them very versatile, capable of both edging and smearing well. In fact, since trying them, the Team 5.10 has become my number one choice for performance on most sport climbs and boulder problems.

To guide our review, we have broken the shoe down into its specific components to give you a full summary of its features.

Scarpa Booster S Climbing Shoe | Gear Review

scarpa-booster-1

As a typical North American climber, I had never seen Scarpa as a strong climbing shoe contender when buying shoes. Blinded by my own ignorance, it was only until travelling to Europe this summer did I open my eyes and realize that Scarpa has been aggressively re-designing their brand with a number of technical innovations that have landed them on top of the European market and sure to make them a contender in the North American Climbing scene.

Over the past five years, Scarpa has put a lot of emphasis on redesigning their climbing shoe line, a change that first started with the hire of Heinz Mariacher, one of the foremost climbing shoe designers in the world. Behind the scenes, Scarpa has been pioneering a number of technical innovations with Heinz, including a concept they call Active-tensioned Rands. Combine these innovations with high-quality manufacturing and the result is Scarpa’s Booster S climbing shoe. Whether it is the peak of their shoe design or just the beginning, Scarpa, you have my attention!

Gear Review: Petzl Djinn Axess Quickdraw

petzl-djinn

Quickdraw design has come into wider scrutiny over the past few years. With the increasing practice of fixing draws, checking wear patterns on fixed draws has become the norm rather than the exception. Exacerbated by a need to reduce weight, the new H-style or concave design used in the modern carabiner has made prolonged-use of a carabiner a risk factor depending on the design. Now more than ever, climbers from all different disciplines are taking into consideration prolonged-use and the design of a quickdraw before shelling out a load of cash for a new set of draws.

Gear Review: Five Ten Team VXI Climbing Shoe

vxi-1

The Five Ten Team VXI is a very unique shoe. They are softer, lighter and stickier than almost everything else available. They are also very stretchy, resulting in a shrink wrap like experience. Think more of a climbing sock than a climbing shoe.

When I first tried them, I was a bit skeptical. I really wondered if a shoe so soft could perform on Squamish granite. Well, they can, and really well at that, but they do take a little getting used to. The VXI isn’t a shoe you very specifically place on a foothold, but rather one you throw at the wall and let stick. Once you get into the groove of using them this way, they are amazing. In fact, for certain things, they are hands down the best shoe the market and a tool I’m excited to have in my arsenal.

To guide our review, we have broken the shoe down into its specific components to give you a full summary of its features.

Gear Review: Patagonia’s Crag Daddy Pack 45L

patagonia-cragdaddy45

I have used a ‘duffle style’ backpack for years. I love the ‘stuff it’ packing style and the quick accessibility for times when I think I have forgotten something at the crag. However, over the past few years, I’ve had some trouble with my lower back when hiking to the crag. The pack that I’ve used in the past didn’t provide the support I needed for long hikes and I often ended up carrying my rope separately just to make room for all the hot/cold weather essentials. I needed something that was going to give me both the support for my lower back and the convenience of easy access. With this in mind, I decided it would be a great idea to check out Patagonia’s Crag Daddy Pack 45L.
