Over the past week, there has been a flurry social media outreach regarding the logging of old growth forest in the Eldred River Valley. The concern started when a group of engineers were dropped off at the base of the Amon Rudh wall located in that area.
Action was quickly taken by climbers in the area through an online petition against logging the old growth forest that caught the attention of the greater climbing community. The petition itself is already up to 900+ signatures and growing.
According to an update by a CASBC representative, the local climbing community surrounding Eldred River Valley met with Western Forest Products and were assured that no logging was going to happen in the immediate future. The CASBC representative also got a verbal commitment from Western Forest Products that they would GPS the existing access trail to the Amon Rudh Wall.
The CASBC representative in the area also met with a representative of Western Forest Products personally this week with them to educate them about the recreational climbing development in the Eldred Valley, provide them with a map of the climbing trails already established and talked about the climbers camp and the history of climbing in the area. The exposure may have created an opportunity to make a real difference in how climbing and recreation planning in the Eldred is developed for the future.
Squamish Climbing Magazine will continue to update as the situation progresses
