This weekend, The Edge Climbing Centre is hosting the 2016 BC Bouldering Provincials. Yesterday’s action featured the final showdown of the season in the Open Bouldering category for Men and Women.

All season, we have been inundated with top-form action from the Women’s category. All of the top competitors in the Women’s category have gone head to head, with last years Provincial Champion, Tiffany Melius, battling it out in the rankings with Alannah Yip, who came back from her time in Switzerland last year with some serious motivation to climb. Along side these two individuals, Sophie Buitendyk made a big push to the top this season and impressed us with her natural technique and style. These climbers were pushed hard by a number of talented competitors including Maria Celkova, Alison Patterson Stewart, Thomasina Pidgeon, Allison Vest, and Mika Hosoi.
From the Men’s category, local favourite Jesse Taplin continued to make his rise to the top as he consistently placed well in almost every event this season while being pushed by Seattle-based climber, Alex Fritz. Other notable competitors included Ivan Lou, Tristen Gosselin, Kyle Murdoch, and Kin Wah Lai, all who consistently made it to finals throughout the season.
The scene was set yesterday for both Men and Women categories for an all out showdown. A few new faces in the field made things a little exciting, with Sean McColl and Mathilde Becerra both being in town to compete in the event.
In the end, Mathilde Becerra took a close first place finish, followed by an amazing performance by Allison Vest to finish the season. Alannah Yip ended up placing third place to take first place overall in the Provincial rankings. On the Men’s side, Sean McColl took first place followed by Alex Fritz and Elan Jonas Mcrae and then Jesse Taplin.
