The 2017 Canadian Open Bouldering Championship has started this morning and the competition is off to a strong start with Sean McColl, eight time champion, flashing the first problem. The competition scene in Canada has been fierce this year, with both Male and Female Categories producing strong competition between some very talented and dedicated competitors. Surely, the 2017 Canadian Open Bouldering Championship will be the exact same.
On the Men’s side, the competition looks difficult straight out of the gate with Sean McColl, the eight time Open Canadian National Champion starting things off. Sean will be joined by a number of Canadian competitors who have competed in the World Cup in recent years, including Sebastien Lazure, Jason Holowach, Kin Wah Lai, and Elan Jonas McCrae later this morning.
With a strong selection of climbers from BC, including the 2017 Youth Boulder Nationals Ivan Luo (Winner of the 2017 Youth Boulder Nationals) Tosh Sherkat, Jesse Taplin, and JJ Mah, the rest of the provinces have their work cut out for them.
On the women’s side of the competition, the cross province competition will be the highlight of the competition, with strong competitors from both Eastern and Western Canada going head to head for the first time in the year including Montreal’s Emilie Pellerin battling it out with the strong Western Canadian contingent of Alannah Yip, Allison Vest, Tiffany Melius, Jani Zoraj, and Sophie Buitendyk.
Qualifications will take place this morning for men followed by the women in the afternoon. Live scoring of the event can be found here. Only semi-finals and finals will have a live stream for this event so stay tuned tomorrow for live stream link
