This weekend, The Edge Climbing Centre in North Vancouver will play host to the 2016 British Columbia Bouldering Provincials. The event will take place across two days, with Saturday being the main event for the Open category (including juniors and Youth A) and Sunday being dedicated to Youth B,Youth C, Youth D, Recreational, Experienced, and Masters categories.
Simon Parton, the head route setter for the event, will have his work cut out for him as he will try to differentiate a field that will include World Cup competitors Sean McColl and Elan Jonas McCrae, as well as local favourite Jesse Taplin, who just came off a second place win at the Alberta Bouldering Provincials. In the women’s field, it will be the top competitors of the year, Alannah Yip, Tiffany Melius, and Sophie Buitendyk, who will be going head to head. Alannah Yip and Tiffany Melius are one spot away from each other in the Provincial standings, so the pressure is on for both of these athletes.
The format for this event will be the same format used in IFSC bouldering qualifier events, meaning that the competition will be run exactly like the CEC National Series competition that took place at The Hive North Shore in December. This means that the action will be steady, so be sure to get there on time if you plan to watch finals, schedules for Saturday afternoon.
